In Essay for 4 voices and 12 books, composer and poet Samuel Vriezen invites four performers to bring three books each and read from them following a specific score. Inspired by John Cage's Number pieces, the score gives each performer a set of one-minute time brackets, to be filled as he or she sees fit but at the same time respecting the instructions in terms of the amount of words or lines to be read. The piece starts with the performers handing their books over to each other, so that none of them know what they will be reading from.
