Mazes, or labyrinths, are found throughout Stanley Kubricks films. They signal the protagonist's loss of self. Heading nowhere in particular, they go about in circles, and surrender themselves to a system that operates according to strictly regular instructions.
As they have no sense of direction, they often find themselves in jeopardy once inside the maze. Sometimes, they are followed (Lolita, Eyes Wide Shut). Other times, they meet with a representation of the Minotaur (2001, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket). Their only refuge is to counter the system's impassiveness with human consciousness and creativity.
