Kubrick, an avid chessplayer, takes a chess player's point of view at the world - remotely, scaled, like a Demiurg or Creator holding the threads by which he manoeuvers the various manifestations of his soul.
The panoramic battlefields of Spartacus and Barry Lyndon are a projection of a strategist who looks down on his men from above. The hotel in The Shining is called "The Overlook Hotel". By contrast, the people seem small and insignificant, both indoors and outdoors. The scene from Eyes Wide Shut shows a typical large Kubrick room that is reminiscent of the interior of a palace or cathedral. The configuration of the balls on the billiard table seem like the scaled configuration of an entire universe, operated by gods.
