There are many facets to an eye, and this applies especially to eyes in the films of Stanley Kubrick. They break down in three categories:
- Violating Eyes (HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alex as he is driving in A Clockwork Orange, Jack Torrance in The Shining, Gomer Pyle in Full Metal Jacket, Alice Harford in Eyes Wide Shut) - Violated Eyes (George in The Killing, Humbert Humbert in Lolita, the astronaut in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alex as he watches film clips in A Clockwork Orange, Danny Torrance in The Shining) - Eyes Wide Shut (Paths of Glory, the Astronaut in 2001: A Space Odyssey, Danny Torrance in The Shining, Mandy in Eyes Wide Shut)
Apparently, some eyes fall in multiple categories. I was unable to find anything resembling an eye, or the absence of eye, in Barry Lyndon, with the exception of Chevalier de Balibari's eye patch. Please comment with any suggestions!
In chronological order, this overview includes clips from The Killing, Paths of Glory, Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes Wide Shut.
